Durón's War of the Giants
Gabriel Garrido - conductor
The War of the Giants? No, this is not about politics, not even of the baroque, although…
Here is a beautiful allegory from Gabriel Garrido, for his next premiere at Ambronay. Unsatisfied with the lot allocated to his kind, Pallas persuades the Giants and the Titans to rebel against his brother Zeus, undisputed god of Olympus, who will of course be victorious, but with the help of a mortal hero, his son Heracles. This Opera deducida de la Guerre de los Gigantes was written for the Count of Salvatierra by one of the greatest Spanish composers of the time, Sebastian Durón, master of the Royal Chapel of Charles II in Madrid. A richly coloured score which reveals French and Italian elements, but is above all Spanish.
